Canute E. Dalmasse, 63, of Nebraska Valley Road, Stowe, Vermont, passed away at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. Born in New York City on March 7, 1944, he was the son of the late Edward Eliodore and Adele Marjorie (Hansen) Dalmasse. On July 11, 1971, Canute married the former Diane Post in Westhampton NY.
In 1967 Canute graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He served his country from 1968 – 1970 in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Army, 101st Airborne and following his discharge, moved to Vermont where he settled in Stowe.
Canute was an environmental steward for 36 years at the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources and served for four years as Commissioner at the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation. Following, Canute served for seven years as Deputy Secretary at the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, retiring on April 30, 2007.
His memberships included the Stowe Recreation Commission, the Stowe Youth Hockey Association where he served as president, and the Lake Champlain Steering Committee where he served as chairman. In his leisure time, Canute enjoyed sailing on the south shore of Long Island, boating on Lake Champlain, was an avid fisherman and duck hunter, enjoyed alpine skiing and was an accomplished guitarist, enjoying playing at family gatherings.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Diane Dalmasse of Stowe; their sons, Leighton Dalmasse of Cambridge MA and Canute Dalmasse of Hong Kong; 2 sisters, Denise Dalmasse and her husband, Robert Johnson of Stowe, and Deborah Dalmasse and her husband, Dana Hickling of East Moriches NY; a brother, Christopher Dalmasse of South Hampton NY; as well as a niece, 4 nephews and a very large extended family.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Vermont River Conservancy, 29 Main Street, Suite 11, Montpelier VT 05602.
